History of Arenal
Lake Arenal was dammed in 1979 to provide a constant water flow to the farmers in Costa Rica's dry northwestern province, Guanacaste, and to supply a large portion of the country's electricity.
While the lake provides stunning views to the residents of Buena Vista, the area is best defined by its volcano, Volcan Arenal, which draws thousands of tourists each year to watch lava cascade down its steep slopes. Rising 5,356 feet (1,633 meters) above sea level, the volcano is one of the ten most active in the world.
